How Are Cognitive Skills Developed In Your Child?

Your child starts to develop several skills as he/she starts to grow. Amongst these, they start to develop an ability to think on their own and act accordingly. In short, it is called cognitive development through which your child learns about new information, processes it and speaks about it when needed. This is a complex process and as your child grows, he/she starts to complete these milestones of several cognitive skills that get developed in them.

If you are wondering how your kid learns about new things and thinks differently by building thinking skills, here is what you should know.

Brain’s wiring system gets built

Your child’s brain would still be in the developing state and is much smaller in size. However, it functions no differently than that of yours. Each brain cell called neuron is connected to other neurons which form a wide connection, just like a tree. When your kid processes any information, it passes from one neuron to another with the help of neurotransmitters.

Neurotransmitters are the brain chemicals that pass on the information from one cell to another and hence reach the nervous system of your child. The information is processed here, and the signals are sent back to the original source as feedback, which leads to the actions in your child.

Developing cognitive skills via different senses

You would have seen your toddler use their senses of smell, touch, sight, and taste in their day-to-day life. These senses help them to build up skills and as they grow up into kids, they learn different things via these 5 senses that they have.

Consequently, these activities that they do out of their senses help in building neural pathways in their nervous system.

Learning via language

Kids start to learn their mother tongue when they reach the age of 2 to 7. They are exposed to languages and different ideas which make them think and learn about new things that surround them. This is a crucial time for your child.

Notably, since they are in their learning stage, you must provide them with an environment that is language-rich. The more ideas and words your child is exposed to, the more would be the development of neural pathways.

Developing cognitive skills via logic and reasoning

As your kid starts to attend school, they start to develop logical skills since they start finding connections between things. They start to understand the causes and effects theory and put it into their practical life.

Once your kid starts to develop logical skills, they begin to reason things. They try to figure out the outcomes that might be possible out of a certain situation. When they develop both these logical and reasoning skills, their mind becomes sharp and the brain starts to think differently. Thus, you can try asking your child their opinions when they become teens to know how their thinking process works and what they think of a particular situation.

As a parent, you must make sure that your child learns things in a better way and develops the needed skills as he or she starts to grow.

Now that you know how cognitive skills are developed in your child, be sure to take the necessary steps in making them learn about new things.
